One Year Since Narges Mohammadi’s Nobel Peace Prize: Her Reflections from Evin Prison
Yesterday 6th Oct 2024 marked one year since the announcement of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Narges Mohammadi. From inside the notorious Evin Prison, she wrote a letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, sharing what the announcement has meant to her, the movement, and the road ahead.

On the anniversary of receiving this award, what would you say to the Nobel Institute that is about to announce the next Nobel Peace Prize laureate?

Peace is not just the absence of destruction, death, and the terror caused by war; it is also liberation from living under the ominous shadow of tyranny, poverty, discrimination, threats, execution, oppression, the anxiety of insecurity, and being forgotten and voiceless.
I do not believe that women—these numerous beings who have been pushed to despair by the severe discrimination, complex inequalities, and deeply rooted historical oppressions in countries that appear not to be at war—can feel peace.
The Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 awarded to me reflects the global attention and influence on the conscious and fighting women of Iran. It was a hope for the women of the Middle East. It was a support for the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement and a tribute to Mahsa (Zhina) Amini.
The world’s most prestigious award was given to a woman in Iran who is fighting for human rights and women’s rights, who dreams of a transition from tyranny to democracy, and whose ideals are freedom and equality. Its direct meaning was to support the committed democratic movement for human rights and women’s rights.
The announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize 2023 began with the slogan of the Iranian people’s movement. Hearing “Women, Life, Freedom” from the podium of the Nobel Peace Foundation was like an echo of the slogan of the protesting women and men in the streets, for which you have worked for a year to have it heard in the world. I sincerely thank you.
Even though I face many long years of imprisonment ahead, even though my phone calls were cut off just 50 days after receiving the award, even though I lost my father this year and did not even say goodbye at his grave, even though the separation from Kiana and Ali is an unbearable and unhealing pain that does not leave me, I am filled with the fervor of resistance, life, and struggle. I will endure any suffering, deprivation, and hardship for the sake of peace, democracy, and human rights, and the hardships will make me stronger and more resilient.
One day, not too far from now, you will hear the anthem of our liberation from gender apartheid and the victory anthem of the Iranian people ending tyranny. That day will undoubtedly come, and you will share in our victory celebration.

دیروز، ششم اکتبر، ۱۵ مهر ۱۴۰۳ یک سال از اعلام جایزه صلح نوبل ۲۰۲۳ که به نرگس محمدی اهدا شد، گذشت. او از زندان بدنام اوین در ایران، نامه‌ای به کمیته نوبل نروژ نوشته و احساس خود را درباره این جایزه و مسیر پیش رویش بیان کرده.

“صلح نه فقط فقدانِ ویرانی ومرگ و وحشت ناشی از جنگ، بلکه رهایی از زیستنِ زیرِ سایه‌ی شوم استبداد، فقر، تبعیض، تهدید، اعدام، ستم، اضطرابِ ناامنی و فراموش‌شدگی و بی‌صدایی است.
تصور نمی‌کنم زنان، این پرشمار انسان‌های به ستوه‌آمده از شدت تبعیض و نابرابری‌های پیچیده و ستم‌های تاریخیِ ریشه‌دار در کشورهایی که به ظاهر درگیر جنگ نیستند، احساس صلح داشته باشند.
جایزه‌ی نوبل صلح در سال ۲۰۲۳ به اینجانب نشان‌دهنده‌ی توجه جهانیِ تأثیرگذاری به زنانِ آگاه ومبارز ایران بود. امیدی برای زنانِ خاورمیانه بود. حمایتی از جنبشِ “زن، زندگی، آزادی” واحترام به مهسا ـ ژینا امینی بود.
معتبرترین جایزه‌ی جهان به زنی در ایران داده شد که برای تحقق حقوق بشر وحقوق زنان مبارزه می‌کند و سودای گذار از استبداد به دموکراسی دارد و آزادی و برابری آرمان اوست. معنای مستقیمِ آن، حمایت از جریانِ دموکراسی‌خواه متعهد به حقوق بشر وحقوق زنان بود.
اعلام جایزه‌ی نوبل صلح ۲۰۲۳ با شعارِ جنبشِ مردمیِ ایرانیان آغاز شد. شنیدن “زن، زندگی، آزادی” از تریبون بنیاد نوبل صلح، گویی پژواکِ شعار زنان ومردانِ معترض در کف خیابان‌ها بود که شما یک سال برای شنیده شدنِ آن در جهان تلاش کرده اید. صمیمانه سپاسگزارم.
گرچه سال‌های طولانیِ زندان را پیش رو دارم، گرچه تنها پس از ۵۰ روز از دریافت جایزه، تماس‌های تلفنی‌ام قطع شده، گرچه در این سال پدرم را از دست دادم وبا او حتی بر مزارش وداع نکردم، گرچه فراق کیانا وعلی چونان دردی التیام‌ناپذیر ونوشونده رهایم نمی‌کند، اما لبریز از شور مقاومت، زندگی و مبارزه هستم. برای رسیدن به صلح، دموکراسی وحقوق بشر هر رنج، محرومیت وسختی را تحمل خواهم کرد و سختی‌ها مرا قوی‌تر و محکم‌تر می‌کنند.
روزی نه چندان دور سرودِ رهایی ما زنان از آپارتاید جنسیتی وسرود پیروزی مردم ایران از پایان دادنِ به استبداد را خواهید شنید. آن روز بی‌تردید فرا خواهد رسید وشما در جشن پیروزیِ ما سهیم هستید.
“امروز ما از صلحی که آرزوی همه نیک اندیشان جهان بوده، به غایت دوریم. این فاصله را با اراده های محکم، شجاعت، ایستادگی، همبستگیِ صلح طلبان می توان پر کرد.”
