On Anniversary of ‘Woman, Life, Freedom,’ Mohammadi Calls for Referendum on Iran’s Future
On the third anniversary of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” uprising in Iran, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi addressed a press conference hosted by the Italian Parliament in Rome, joining virtually from Tehran.
In her remarks, Mohammadi honored the memory of Mahsa (Jina) Amini, whose death in September 2022 sparked a nationwide movement for democracy, equality, and women’s rights. She called the uprising “not just a protest, but an intellectual renaissance and historic leap” led by women and young people.
Mohammadi emphasized that the demand at the heart of this movement is the right of the Iranian people to self-determination. She declared:
“The path forward is a free referendum, under international supervision. This is the simplest and most fundamental way to realize self-determination.”
She also urged the Italian Parliament and democratic governments worldwide to support this call, stressing that solidarity with the Iranian people is not only vital for Iran’s future but also for peace and justice in the region engulfed in tyranny and conflict.
Mohammadi condemned decades of repression, executions, and the systemic oppression of women under what she called “a cruel gender apartheid.” She described the resilience of Iranians who, despite killings, imprisonments, and forced exiles, continue to fight for democracy, freedom, equality, and human rights.

Honorable Member of the Italian Parliament,
Ms. Boldrini,
Distinguished members of the media,
And all the organizers of this gathering,
My duty today is to speak about the people who resist authoritarian policies every day. Every night they face the black walls of prisons, knowing that gallows are raised for their young.
Today, on the third anniversary of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” uprising, I want to speak about a principle that knows no borders: the right of nations to self-determination.
In 1979, Khomeini, the leader of the Islamic Republic, said in his first speech:
“The destiny of every nation lies in its own hands.”
But history moved in the opposite direction.
The 1980s: executions and mass repression.
The 1990s: the bloody crackdown on students.
The 2000s: the Green Movement and thousands of arrests.
The 2010s: the protests of 2017 and 2019, with thousands killed or imprisoned.
And finally, in September 2022, the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, which spread across the world.
This movement was not just a protest; it was an intellectual renaissance, a historic leap.
For the first time, women and young people emerged as powerful leaders. The slogans did not call for partial reforms but for the fall of a system that has always denied people their right to choose.
The price of this movement was heavy: hundreds killed, tens of thousands detained, with teenagers and even children among the victims. Many face execution or forced exile.
Yet the movement has not been silenced, because it is rooted in an undeniable demand: we want the right to determine our own destiny.
History is filled with nations that have fought for this right. Denying it has been, and still is, the source of wars, occupations, and oppression.
We Iranians know this clearly: our demand is the most legitimate, universal, and human principle.
How else can we cry out that we do not want a religious dictatorship, but democracy, freedom, equality, and human rights?
The path forward is a free referendum, under international supervision. This is the simplest and most fundamental way to realize self-determination.
Allow me one direct question: if your nation were deprived of this right, if generations lived without free choice, what would you do?
This has been the experience of the Iranian people for more than four decades.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
We know the world is not equal, and diplomacy is often the art of managing these inequalities.
But even in this unequal world, democratic nations, their representatives, and international institutions can stand with other peoples.
This is not only for Iran; it is for the future of a world where justice and peace can exist. It is for a Middle East drowning in violence, tyranny, and war, where women burn in the fire of a cruel gender apartheid.
I hope my voice from Iran will be heard in Italy: the people of Iran want democracy, freedom, equality, development, dignity, security, and peaceful coexistence with the world.
We want to free our land before it is destroyed.
In conclusion, my hope is this:
that the third anniversary of “Woman, Life, Freedom” will not only recall pain but mark a step toward the day when Iranians freely choose their destiny.
The day we can tell our children: we did not want dictatorship and war; we chose freedom, democracy, and peace.

نرگس محمدی صبح امروز ۲۵ شهریور ۱۴۰۴ در نشست خبری پارلمان ایتالیا به مناسبت سومین سالگرد کشته شدن مهسا ژینا امینی و جنبش با شکوه «زن زندگی آزادی» با حضور نمایندگان پارلمان، مدیر بخش ایتالیایی زبان و اعضای سازمان عفو بین‌الملل، رسانه‌ها و فعالان مدنی ایتالیا سخنرانی کرد.
او در این سخنرانی و جلسه پرسش و پاسخ تأکید کرد که «حق تعیین سرنوشت» یکی از مشروع‌ترین و بنیادی‌ترین حقوق ملت‌هاست، حقی که جمهوری اسلامی از مردم ایران سلب کرده است.
محمدی ادامه داد: «چگونه مردم ایران فریاد بزنند که استبداد دینی نمی‌خواهند و در پی تحقق دموکراسی، آزادی و برابری هستند؟»

و تمامی برگزار کنندگان این نشست،
این لحظه برای من شرکت در یک مراسم رسمی نیست؛ بخشی از همان مبارزه‌ای است که زندگی‌ام را شکل داده است.
وظیفه ما این روزها سخن گفتن از وضعیت مردمانی است که هر روز و در هر مکانی در مقابل سیاست های استبدادی حکومت ایستادگی می کنند و هر شب به دیوار سخت و سیاه زندانهایی خیره می مانند که می دانند طناب های دار برای سرهای جوانانشان برافراشته می شود.
امروز، در سومین سالگرد خیزش «زن، زندگی، آزادی»، سخنم درباره مفهوم و تجربه‌ای است که مرز نمی‌شناسد: حق تعیین سرنوشت ملت‌ها.
خمینی، رهبر جمهوری اسلامی در سال ۱۳۵۷ در نخستین سخنرانی خود گفت:
«سرنوشت هر ملتی به دست خودش است.» اما ۴۶ سال درست خلاف این سخن پیش رفتند.
دهه شصت: اعدام‌ها و خفقان .
دهه هفتاد: سرکوب خونین معترضان و نویسندگان و دانشجویان.
دهه هشتاد: جنبش سبز و کشتار و اعدام و دستگیری هزاران نفر.
دهه نود: اعتراض‌های دی ۹۶ و آبان ۹۸، با هزاران کشته و زندانی.
و سرانجام، در شهریور ۱۴۰۱، جنبش «زن، زندگی، آزادی» که جهانی شد.
جنبش «زن، زندگی، آزادی»فقط یک اعتراض نبود؛ یک رنسانس فکری و جهشی تاریخی در جامعه بود.
برای نخستین بار زنان و جوانان میدان‌داران اصلی و پرقدرت شدند. شعارها، اصلاحات نیم‌بند نبود؛ خواسته اصلی ، عبور و فرو ریختن ساختاری بود که همواره مردم را از حق انتخاب محروم کرده است.
بهای این حرکت تاریخی سنگین بود: صدها کشته، ده‌ها هزار بازداشتی، نوجوانان و حتی کودکان در میان جان‌باختگان. بسیاری در خطر اعدام یا در تبعید اجباری.
اما این جنبش خاموش نشد؛ زیرا ریشه‌اش درخواستی بدیهی است: ما حق تعیین سرنوشت مان را می خواهیم..
بیایید نگاه جهانی داشته باشیم.
تاریخ پر است از ملت‌هایی که برای این حق جنگیده‌اند. نادیده گرفتن این حق، سرچشمه جنگ‌ها ، اشغالگری‌ها و ستم ها بوده و هنوز هست.
ما ایرانیان اما یک چیز را روشن می‌دانیم:
مطالبه ما، مشروع ترین و قانونی ترین اصل جهان شمول و حق انسانی است.
مردم ایران چگونه فریاد بزنند که حکومت استبدادی دینی نمی خواهند و به دنبال تحقق دموکراسی و آزادی و برابری و حقوق بشرند؟
راه رهایی رفراندومی آزاد است، با نظارت نهادهای بین‌المللی.
این ساده ترین و بنیادی‌ترین راه تحقق حق تعیین سرنوشت است.
اجازه دهید یک پرسش مستقیم از شما داشته باشم:
اگر ملت شما از این حق محروم می‌شد، اگر نسل‌های شما بدون انتخاب آزاد می‌زیستند، چه می‌کردید؟
این همان تجربه مردم ایران در بیش از چهار دهه گذشته است، گر چه مردم ایران با جنبش ها، قیام ها و خیزش های پی در پی ، صحنه های اعتراض تاریخی و جهانی خلق کردند و مشروعیت و اقتدار جمهوری اسلامی را گرفتند.
خانم‌ها و آقایان،
ما می‌دانیم جهان برابر نیست. و دیپلماسی اغلب هنر مدیریت همین نابرابری‌هاست.
اما حتی در این جهان نابرابر هم، مردم بهره مند از دموکراسی و نمایندگان آنها و مجامع بین المللی می‌توانند در کنار سایر ملت‌ها بایستند.
این همراهی فقط برای ایران نیست؛ برای آینده جهانی است که در آن عدالت و صلح امکان‌پذیر باشد. برای خاورمیانه ای است که در طوفان خشونت، خشم، استبداد و جنگ غرق شده است و تلخ تر آنکه در میانه جنگ و خشونت، زنان در آتش سوزناک آپارتاید جنسیتی می سوزند.
امید دارم صدای ما از سرزمین ایران در ایتالیا شنیده شود که مردم ایران دموکراسی،آزادی ،برابری ، توسعه، رفاه و زندگی توام با کرامت انسانی همچنین صلح ،امنیت و همزیستی مداراگرانه و مسالمت آمیز و تعامل با همه جهان و کشورها را می خواهند. ما میخواهیم پیش از ویرانی سرزمینمان ، آزادش کنیم.
در پایان، امید ما این است:
که سومین سالگرد جنبش «زن، زندگی، آزادی» تنها یادآور رنج‌ها نباشد، بلکه گامی در تداوم مبارزات ما باشد به سوی روزی که مردم ایران آزادانه سرنوشت خود را برگزینند.
روزی که به فرزندانمان بگوییم: ما استبداد و جنگ را نخواستیم، ما مبارزه کردیم و ایستادیم و آزادی ، دموکراسی و صلح را انتخاب کردیم.
