Narges Mohammadi’s 21-Day Temporary Sentence Suspension Ended Today on Christmas Day

Narges Mohammadi’s 21 day temporary sentence suspension is over today on christmas day

December 25, 2024 – Today marks the final day of the 21-day suspension of Narges Mohammadi’s prison sentence, a temporary leave. although her  medical specialists, including her surgeons, have emphasized the necessity of continuing her treatment outside of prison for at least three months.

This brief suspension follows weeks of delays after Narges Mohammadi’s painful bone surgery. Despite enduring severe pain in prison, and tireless advocacy from human rights organizations and international figures, she was finally granted only a 21 day suspension of her sentence. Unlike a “medical furlough,” which would have allowed her recovery time to count toward her sentence, this suspension means she will be required to serve an additional 21 days upon her return.

In recent days, her legal team filed a request with judicial authorities to extend the suspension of her sentence. A forensic medical evaluation, initially scheduled for today to assess the extension, was postponed due to the closure of Tehran because of hazardous air pollution. The evaluation has now been rescheduled for Saturday, December 28, 2024.

The Narges Foundation remains deeply concerned about the inadequate care provided to Ms. Mohammadi, whose health has drastically deteriorated due to her prolonged imprisonment. Despite repeated calls for her treatment outside prison, her doctors and family have stressed that continuing her care in a prison environment is no longer tenable. The unsanitary prison conditions, lack of proper medical facilities, and the strain of recent surgeries have all compounded her health issues.

The Narges Foundation calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Narges Mohammadi or, at the very least, an extension of her medical leave for a minimum of three months. After more than a decade of imprisonment for her peaceful activism in support of human and women’s rights—work that earned her the Nobel Peace Prize—she deserves proper medical care in a safe, sanitary environment.

We call on all human rights organizations, international institutions, feminist movements, pro-democracy groups, and activists worldwide to continue amplifying Narges Mohammadi’s voice.
We demand the immediate dismissal of all charges against her, and the freedom of all political prisoners in Iran.
