Narges Mohammadi Undergoes Urgent Surgery After Weeks of Medical Neglect, Sent Back to Prison Instead of Granted Medical Furlough

November 17, 2024

The Narges Foundation expresses profound concern over recent developments involving Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi. Following weeks of being denied essential medical care, Narges underwent urgent surgery last week to remove a suspected cancerous bone tumor from the upper part of her lower leg. The procedure, which included a complex bone graft, underscores the gravity of her condition and the critical need for adequate medical attention.

Despite medical recommendations for at least three months of recovery under suitable conditions, Narges was returned to prison on November 16, 2024. Her treating physician has explicitly stated that she requires proper post-operative care to prevent complications and support her recovery.

Her lawyer Mostafa Nili said on X : “Last week, Ms. Narges Mohammadi underwent surgery to remove a bone tumor from the upper part of her lower leg and had a bone graft. She was returned to prison today. Given the nature of the surgery and the location of the injury, Ms. Narges Mohammadi’s treating physician has recommended three months of proper post-surgical care. We have requested a medical leave and suspension of her sentence from judicial authorities and are awaiting their decision.”

Narges Mohammadi has been denied all contact and visitation with her family and lawyer since November 29, 2023, nearly a year ago—just 50 days after she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. This ban remains in effect to this day.

Narges Mohammadi should be released immediately. This situation is inhumane and a persistent violation of Narges Mohammadi’s fundamental human rights. The decision to return her to prison instead of granting the urgently needed medical furlough not only jeopardizes her health but also highlights the ongoing systemic repression of human rights defenders in Iran.

We demand her unconditional release and urgently call for the approval of her lawyer’s request for medical leave and the suspension of her sentence to ensure her recovery.
