Narges Mohammadi Spoke Live in Italy on Iranian Women’s Resistance
On 13 September, Iranian activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi attended the conference “Conflicts: Where Are the Women?” in Italy and delivered a powerful live address on the resilience and courage of Iranian women.
As the third anniversary of Mahsa (Jina) Amini’s killing approaches, Mohammadi reflected on the ongoing struggle for women’s rights in Iran and the enduring impact of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, which emerged after Mahsa Amini’s death. She emphasized how this movement has become a symbol of courage, dignity, and defiance against the authoritarian regime, and highlighted the vital role of women in leading societal change even under extreme oppression.
During her speech, Mohammadi said:
“As an Iranian woman from the Middle East, I must first say: No to war, no to oppression, and yes to democracy.”
“At the intersection of war and oppression, violence against women is intensified.”
“In countries like Iran and Afghanistan, where governments are dictatorial and religious, gender apartheid is reinforced. Women suffer oppression and humiliation in daily life, and during wartime, all of this is intensified.”
“One of the consequences of war is the worsening of the economic situation of women and children. During the 12-day war between Israel and Iran, women and children suffered the most damage.”
“The Islamic Republic used the 12-day war to further suppress the people. The war led to harsher charges, including espionage, even for those arrested before it, and intensified repression.”
“In this movement, women have emerged as the most radical force of protest in society, demonstrating the power of dissent. Women have proven that this approach works: no matter how much the government increases pressure and repression, we women must intensify the struggle.”
“I want international organizations and media to support the people of Iran in achieving the right to determine their own destiny.”
The event featured voices from the frontlines of humanitarian and conflict work:
Mariana Cortesi (Italy), Médecins Sans Frontières, shared insights from providing medical care in conflict zones.
Olimpia Sermonti (Italy), Intersos, discussed humanitarian aid and protection programs for women and children in crisis areas.
Tetiana Molodii (Ukraine), Soleterre, spoke about projects supporting women and children affected by war and displacement.
A representative from Emergency (Italy) highlighted medical assistance for victims of conflict and poverty.
The discussion was curated by Italian journalist Greta Privitera and organized by Corriere della Sera’s “Il Tempo delle Donne” festival.
