United Front Against Executions: Dayeh Sharifeh Joins the Fight for Justice

Narges Mohammadi Meets Dayeh Sharifeh Amid Temporary Suspension of Sentence Press Release

Tehran, Iran – December 23, 2024 – Narges Mohammadi, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, recently met with Dayeh Sharifeh, a Kurdish septuagenarian renowned for her unyielding opposition to the death penalty in Iran. This poignant meeting comes during Mohammadi’s 21-day suspension of her prison sentence, highlighting the shared struggles of women resisting systemic injustice.

Dayeh Sharifeh, whose full name is Sharifeh Zarini, has faced profound personal losses. Of her six sons and two daughters, her youngest son, Ramin Hossein Panahi, was executed in Tehran’s Evin Prison in September 2018, alongside two other political prisoners—Zaniar and Loqman Moradi. The bodies of the three men were never returned to their families, depriving them of closure and the opportunity for a dignified burial.

Throughout the years, Sharifeh has stood in solidarity with civil activists like Narges Mohammadi and the families of those killed by the Islamic Republic. Her activism has made her a prominent figure in the fight against capital punishment, inspiring others to join the call for justice.

Meanwhile, Mohammadi is required to return to prison on December 25, 2024—Christmas Day—despite medical advice recommending at least a three-month suspension to address her fragile health. The Narges Foundation has reiterated the urgency of uninterrupted medical care to safeguard her well-being.

This meeting underscores the profound solidarity among advocates like Mohammadi and Dayeh Sharifeh, who continue to fight against the death penalty and for human rights despite immense personal sacrifices.

“Meeting Dayeh Sharifeh is a reminder of the suffering endured by mothers whose children were executed, with their bodies denied to them, preventing a burial by their loved ones. Dayeh Sharifeh opposes executions and is a strong voice advocating for their abolition. We stand together and will continue to fight to end executions.” says Narges Mohammadi
