International coalition launches to demand immediate release of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Narges Mohammadi in Iran
New York, Paris, Dublin, 11 June 2024. Four leading human rights and press freedom organisations have come together to form a new dynamic international campaign united in calling for the immediate release of Iranian journalist, writer, and human rights defender Narges Mohammadi. The Free Narges Coalition is launching following an 8 June court hearing in a new case against Mohammadi that could further lengthen her prison sentence.
With a steering committee comprised of PEN America, Reporters Without Borders (RSF), and Front Line Defenders, in collaboration with the Narges Foundation, the Free Narges Coalition urgently calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, who has been detained in Iran’s Evin prison since November 2021.

Mohammadi, celebrated globally for her relentless pursuit of human rights, journalism, freedom of expression, and women’s rights, recently marked her 52nd birthday—her 10th birthday spent behind bars.
Throughout her lifetime of activism, Mohammadi has been sentenced to a total of 35 years and three months in prison, in addition to facing a harrowing sentence of 154 lashes—a punishment that blatantly violates international human rights laws. She has also endured 135 days in solitary confinement, recognised internationally as a form of torture. Mohammadi’s latest period of detention started in November 2021, and she is currently serving multiple prison sentences on charges related to “propaganda against the state” and “collusion against state security.”
Adding to the urgency is Mohammadi’s critical health situation. Despite undergoing heart surgery just a year ago, she has been repeatedly denied necessary medical care while in detention, raising grave concerns about her well-being. As a journalist and human rights defender, Mohammadi’s voice has been crucial in shedding light on injustice, making her health and freedom a paramount concern for the international community.
Mohammadi’s plight sheds light on the gross and systematic human rights violations in Iran, where many are punished for exercising their right to freedom of expression and other fundamental freedoms. The Free Narges Coalition demands Mohammadi’s immediate and unconditional release as an emblematic figure representing the many other persecuted and silenced voices in Iran, along with that of all political prisoners in Iran, advocating for their right to speak and act freely without fear of persecution.
The Free Narges Coalition urges the Iranian government to respect its international obligations, including the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association, and for those imprisoned for journalism and human rights work to receive necessary medical care. We also call upon global leaders and human rights organisations to join us in this urgent plea for justice.
The coalition calls on members of the public to support this campaign by using the hashtag #FreeNarges, in a crucial show of solidarity with Narges Mohammadi and others facing oppression in Iran. Their release and medical attention are critical, not just for their own health, but as a symbol of global commitment to human rights and dignity.

ائتلاف بینالمللی “آزادی نرگس” برای درخواست آزادی فوری و بدون قید و شرط برنده جایزه صلح نوبل، نرگس محمدی، در ایران راهاندازی شد.
امروز ۲۲ خرداد ۱۴۰۳ چهار سازمان پیشرو در حوزه حقوق بشر و آزادی مطبوعات گرد هم آمدهاند تا از کارزار بینالمللی آزادی نرگس حمایت کنند و برای آزادی فوری روزنامهنگار، نویسنده و مدافع حقوق بشر ایرانی، نرگس محمدی، متحد شوند. ائتلاف آزادی نرگس در پی آخرین جلسه دادگاه او در ۱۹ خرداد ۱۴۰۳ و پرونده جدیدی علیه نرگس محمدی که میتواند به مدت زمان محکومیت او بیافزاید، راهاندازی میشود.
کمیته ای متشکل از انجمن قلم آمریکا (PEN America)، گزارشگران بدون مرز (RSF)، و فرانت لاین دیفندرز (FLD)، با همکاری بنیاد نرگس، ائتلاف آزادی نرگس را تشکیل داده و خواستار آزادی فوری و بدون قید و شرط نرگس محمدی، برنده جایزه صلح نوبل ۲۰۲۳، است که از آبان۱۴۰۰ در زندان اوین ایران به سر میبرد، شده اند.

نرگس محمدی، که به دلیل تلاش بیوقفهاش در حوزه حقوق بشر، روزنامهنگاری، تلاش برای آزادی بیان و حقوق زنان در سطح جهانی شناخته شده است، به تازگی پنجاه و دومین سالگرد تولد خود را در دهمین سال تولدی که در زندان سپری کرده است، باز هم در بند زندان اوین جشن گرفت.
نرگس محمدی مجموعاً به ۳۵ سال و سه ماه زندان محکوم شده است و علاوه بر این با حکم وحشتناک ۱۵۴ ضربه شلاق روبروست . مجازاتی که به طور آشکار قوانین بینالمللی حقوق بشر را نقض میکند. او همچنین ۱۳۵ روز را در سلول انفرادی زندانهای ایران سپری کرده است که در سطح بینالمللی به عنوان نوعی شکنجه شناخته میشود (شکنجه سفید). آخرین دوره بازداشت محمدی از آبان ۱۴۰۰ آغاز شده است و او در حال حاضر چندین حکم زندان را با اتهاماتی مربوط به “تبلیغ علیه نظام” و “اجتماع و تبانی علیه امنیت کشور” میگذراند.
باید به وضعیت اضطراری او، شرایط بحرانی جسمانیاش را هم اضافه کنیم. با وجود اینکه دو بار در سال ۱۴۰۱ و ۱۴۰۲ آنژیوی قلب انجام داده است، اما بارها از دریافت مراقبتهای پزشکی ضروری در حین بازداشت محروم شده است که نگرانیهای جدی در مورد سلامتی او را به همراه دارد. به عنوان یک روزنامهنگار و مدافع حقوق بشر، صدای محمدی در افشای بیعدالتیها بسیار مهم بوده است و سلامتی و آزادی او یکی از نگرانیهای اصلی جامعه بینالملل است.
تصریح می کنیم که آزادی و برخورداری از حقوق انسانی به ویژه برخورداری از امکانات کامل پزشکی برای تمامی زندانیان ضروری است، نه تنها برای سلامت خودشان، بلکه به عنوان نمادی از تعهد جهانی به حقوق بشر و کرامت انسانی.
وضعیت نرگس محمدی نشاندهنده نقض فاحش و سیستماتیک حقوق بشر در ایران است، جایی که بسیاری برای استفاده از حق آزادی بیان و دیگر آزادیهای اساسی مجازات میشوند. ائتلاف آزادی نرگس خواستار آزادی فوری و بدون قید و شرط محمدی به عنوان نماد “صداهای سرکوبشده و خاموش در ایران” است، خواسته ای همراه با آزادی تمامی زندانیان سیاسی در ایران، دفاع از حق آزادی بیان و فعالیت مدنی و اجتماعی بدون ترس از برخورد قضایی و بازداشت.
ائتلاف آزادی نرگس از حکومت جمهوری اسلامی میخواهد تا به تعهدات بینالمللی خود از جمله حق آزادی بیان، حق تجمع مسالمتآمیز و حق تشکیل نهادهای مدنی احترام بگذارد و برای کسانی که به دلیل روزنامهنگاری و فعالیتهای حقوق بشری زندانی شدهاند، حق برخورداری از حقوق انسانی از جمله مراقبتهای پزشکی را قائل شود. ما همچنین از رهبران کشورها و سازمانهای حقوق بشری بینالمللی میخواهیم که در این درخواست مهم برای برقراری عدالت به ما بپیوندند.
