Immediately, Unconditionally Release Narges Mohammadi
On 26 june 2024 human rights watch released a statement asking for immediate release of Narges Mohammadi :
Last week, an Iranian court imposed a new bogus sentence on imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize winner and human rights defender Narges Mohammadi. She received another year in Iran’s Evin prison on charges of “propaganda against the state.”
In January 2022, the same court, Branch 29 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, sentenced her to two years prison and 74 lashes.
In imposing the additional sentence, the court cited Mohammadi’s call to boycott Iran’s recent parliamentary elections, her letters to lawmakers in Sweden and Norway supporting Iranian political prisoners, and her advocacy to governments in support of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests. It also pointed to her criticism of Iranian authorities’ torture and sexual assault of Dina Ghalibaf, an Iranian journalist and student of political science.
In December 2023, Mohammadi’s two children delivered her Noble Peace Prize acceptance speech, in which she noted: “I write this message from behind the high, cold walls of a prison. The Iranian people, with perseverance, will overcome repression and authoritarianism.”
Human Rights Watch and others have long documented Iranian authorities’ record of brutally repressing dissent, including security forces’ extensive crackdown on the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests following the death of Mahsa Jina Amini in morality police custody in September 2022. Iranian authorities have frequently targeted prominent rights defenders like Mohammadi, who has boldly campaigned for the abolition of the death penalty and has been outspoken in opposing Iranian authorities’ repressive policies.
Mohammadi is serving consecutive prison sentences, including prolonged solitary confinement of 135 days, which United Nations experts have recognized as a form of torture. Human Rights Watch has documented a pattern of serious violations in Evin prison and other detention facilities and prisons across Iran.
Mohammadi repeatedly called for her latest trial to be public in the presence of the media and independent observers and activists. Yet, according her lawyer, instead of holding a public trial, the authorities conducted the trial in her absence. The #FreeNargesCoalition—composed of PEN America, Reporters without Borders, and Front Line Defenders—and Human Rights Watch have called for Mohammadi’s immediate and unconditional release.
“Western governments should not postpone democracy and human rights by adopting strategies focused on the continuation of the Islamic Republic’s rule,” Mohammadi said in her Nobel speech. “Resistance is alive, and the struggle endures.”

هفته گذشته، دادگاهی در ایران حکم جدیدی علیه نرگس محمدی، برنده جایزه نوبل صلح و مدافع حقوق بشر، صادر کرد. او به دلیل اتهام «تبلیغ علیه نظام» به یک سال دیگر زندان محکوم شد.
در ژانویه 2022، شعبه 29 دادگاه انقلاب تهران، محمدی را به دو سال حبس و 74 ضربه شلاق محکوم کرده بود.
در صدور حکم جدید، دادگاه به درخواست محمدی برای تحریم انتخابات اخیر مجلس، نامه‌هایش به قانون‌گذاران سوئد و نروژ در حمایت از زندانیان سیاسی ایرانی، و حمایت او از اعتراضات «زن، زندگی، آزادی» اشاره کرد. همچنین، انتقادهای او از شکنجه و تجاوز جنسی به دینا قالیباف، خبرنگار و دانشجوی علوم سیاسی ایرانی، توسط مقامات ایرانی مورد توجه قرار گرفت.
در دسامبر 2023، دو فرزند محمدی سخنرانی پذیرش جایزه نوبل او را ارائه کردند. در این سخنرانی، محمدی نوشت: «این پیام را از پشت دیوارهای بلند و سرد زندان می‌نویسم. مردم ایران با پایداری بر سرکوب و استبداد غلبه خواهند کرد.»
سازمان دیده‌بان حقوق بشر و دیگران مدت‌هاست که مدارکی از سرکوب شدید اعتراضات توسط مقامات ایرانی، از جمله سرکوب گسترده اعتراضات «زن، زندگی، آزادی» پس از مرگ مهسا ژینا امینی در بازداشت گشت ارشاد در سپتامبر 2022، مستند کرده‌اند. مقامات ایرانی به‌طور مکرر فعالان برجسته حقوق بشر مانند محمدی را هدف قرار داده‌اند که به‌طور شجاعانه‌ای برای لغو مجازات اعدام مبارزه کرده و مخالف سیاست‌های سرکوبگرانه مقامات ایرانی بوده‌اند.
محمدی در حال سپری کردن احکام متوالی زندان است، از جمله 135 روز حبس انفرادی طولانی‌مدت که کارشناسان سازمان ملل آن را نوعی شکنجه شناخته‌اند. سازمان دیده‌بان حقوق بشر نقض‌های جدی در زندان اوین و دیگر مراکز بازداشت و زندان‌های سراسر ایران را مستند کرده است.
محمدی بارها خواستار علنی بودن آخرین محاکمه‌اش در حضور رسانه‌ها و ناظران مستقل و فعالان شده بود. با این حال، به گفته وکیل او، به جای برگزاری محاکمه علنی، مقامات محاکمه را در غیاب او انجام دادند. ائتلاف #آزادی_نرگس که شامل PEN آمریکا، گزارشگران بدون مرز، مدافعان خط مقدم و سازمان دیده‌بان حقوق بشر است، خواستار آزادی فوری و بدون قید و شرط محمدی شده‌اند.
محمدی در سخنرانی نوبل خود گفت: «دولت‌های غربی نباید با اتخاذ استراتژی‌هایی که بر تداوم حاکمیت جمهوری اسلامی تمرکز دارند، دموکراسی و حقوق بشر را به تعویق بیندازند. مقاومت زنده است و مبارزه ادامه دارد.»
