Narges Mohammadi, the Iranian activist receives honorary citizenship from the Municipality of Rome

The Capitoline Assembly of Italy has awarded honorary citizenship to Narges Mohammadi imprisoned Iranian human rights activist & Nobel Peace Prize laureate 2023.

Rome, October 9 – (Nova) – The Capitoline Assembly approved the proposal presented by Marco Di Stefano, leader of Noi Moderati, to grant honorary citizenship to the Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, Nobel Peace Prize laureate of 2023 “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her struggle to promote human rights and freedom for all.”

Narges Mohammadi, one of the most prominent voices of dissent in Iran, a supporter of the campaign against the death penalty, and vice president of the country’s human rights center, is currently unjustly detained in Evin Prison in Tehran. Over the years, she has been subjected multiple times to arbitrary detention, torture, and mistreatment.

The proposal by the leader of Noi Moderati was also signed by numerous other councilors, both from the majority and the opposition. As Di Stefano explains:

“The granting of honorary citizenship to Narges Mohammadi aims to express the closeness and support of the city of Rome to a person on the front line for safeguarding the rights and dignity of every woman, representing a significant gesture of solidarity and support for all people who are unjustly discriminated against and persecuted in flagrant violation of human rights.”

شهروندی افتخاری شهر رم برای مبارزه علیه سرکوب و استبداد به نرگس محمدی اعطا می شود

شورای شهر رم با اعطای شهروندی افتخاری به نرگس محمدی، فعال حقوق بشر و برنده جایزه نوبل صلح ۲۰۲۳، همبستگی خود را با او و مبارزاتش علیه سرکوب زنان و به منظور ترویج حقوق بشر اعلام کرد.

اعطای شهروندی افتخاری رم به محمدی، اقدامی به ابتکار مارکو دی‌استفانو، سیاست‌مدار ایتالیایی عضو گروه «نوی مودراتی» بود که به اتفاق آرا از سوی شورای شهر رم، پایتخت ایتالیا، تصویب شد.

این شورا در بیانیه خود با اشاره به بازداشت‌های خودسرانه‌ و شکنجه‌های اعمال شده علیه نرگس محمدی که یکی از چهره‌های برجسته در مبارزه برای حقوق بشر در ایران و از جمله حامیان اصلی کمپین علیه اعدام است، نسبت به ادامه حضور ناعادلانه او در زندان اوین تهران ابراز نگرانی کرد : “یکی از برجسته‌ترین صدای مخالفان در ایران، حامی کمپین علیه مجازات اعدام و معاون مرکز حقوق بشر کشور، در حال حاضر به‌طور ناعادلانه‌ای در زندان اوین تهران به سر می‌برد. در طول سال‌ها، او بارها در معرض بازداشت‌های خودسرانه، شکنجه و بدرفتاری قرار گرفته است.”

دی‌استفانو در این باره گفت که اعطای این شهروندی افتخاری نشان‌دهنده همبستگی رم با نرگس محمدی است :”اعطای شهروندی افتخاری به نرگس محمدی به‌منظور ابراز نزدیکی و حمایت شهر رم از شخصی است که در خط مقدم حفاظت از حقوق زنان و کرامت انسانی هر زن قرار دارد و نمایانگر یک اقدام مهم همبستگی و حمایت از همه افرادی است که به‌طور ناعادلانه مورد تبعیض و نقض حقوق بشر قرار می‌گیرند.”
