Free Narges Coalition Strongly Condemns Additional Sentence for Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Narges Mohammadi
In response to the news that an Iranian revolutionary court has sentenced jailed 2023 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Narges Mohammadi to an additional one-year prison sentence on charges of “propaganda activities against the state,” the Free Narges Coalition condemned the sentence and called on Iranian authorities to immediately cease prosecuting Mohammadi for her peaceful expression and advocacy.
The Steering Committee of the Coalition declared: “We strongly condemn the unjust sentencing of Narges Mohammadi by the Islamic Republic of Iran, which essentially criminalizes her peaceful expression and activism, as well as her contact with media and foreign governments. This is a blatant violation of human rights and a distortion of justice. We support the recent call by 36 women political prisoners, including a number of human rights defenders, within Evin Prison for such trials to be held in public and for media and other observers to be allowed access. We also call for all charges against Narges to be dropped, and for her to be released. Finally, we urge the international community and concerned governments to exert pressure on the Iranian regime to respect human rights and uphold justice, and for all organizations, and individuals committed to human rights to join us in demanding justice for Narges Mohammadi and the many other persecuted and silenced voices in Iran.”
On June 18, Mohammadi’s lawyer announced that Branch 29 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court had issued a verdict, sentencing Mohammadi to an additional prison sentence of one year on charges of “propaganda activities against the state.” The evidence cited for this sentence include her statements and voice messages sent from prison, her letter concerning the boycott of parliamentary elections in Iran, and her communications with the parliaments of Sweden and Norway. She was summoned in this case on May 17 by the Prosecutor’s Office, and it quickly proceeded to the trial stage, with a June 8 hearing being held without her presence.
Narges Mohammadi is a woman human rights defender, journalist, author, and deputy director and spokesperson of the Defenders of Human Rights Centre (DHRC) in Iran. Mohammadi’s current period of detention started in November 2021, following her sentencing in May 2021 on charges of committing “propaganda activity against the state.” Her tireless struggle for human rights has been internationally recognized, and she is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, the 2023 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, the 2023 PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Award, and the 2022 Reporters Without Borders Prize for Courage.
The Free Narges Coalition Steering Committee is led by the Narges Foundation, PEN America, Reporters Without Borders (RSF), and Front Line Defenders. ائتلاف «آزادی نرگس» قویاً حکم جدید صادره علیه برنده جایزه صلح نوبل، نرگس محمدی، را محکوم می‌کند.
در واکنش به خبر صدور حکم یک سال حبس اضافی برای نرگس محمدی، برنده جایزه صلح نوبل ۲۰۲۳، توسط دادگاه انقلاب ایران به اتهام «تبلیغ علیه نظام»، ائتلاف «آزادی نرگس» این حکم را محکوم کرده و از مقامات ایرانی می‌خواهد به صدور احکام جدید برای نرگس محمدی صرفا به دلیل ابراز عقاید و فعالیت‌های مسالمت‌آمیزش پایان دهند.
کمیته راهبردی ائتلاف اعلام می کند: «احکام ناعادلانه علیه نرگس محمدی که توسط جمهوری اسلامی ایران صادر می شود قویا محکوم هستند، احکامی که به دلیل ابراز عقیده و فعالیت‌های مسالمت‌آمیز او و همچنین صحبت با رسانه‌ها و دولت‌های خارجی جرم‌انگاری شده‌اند. این یک نقض آشکار حقوق بشر و تحریف عدالت است. ما از درخواست اخیر ۳۶ زندانی سیاسی زن، از جمله مدافعان زن حقوق بشر، در زندان اوین برای برگزاری اینگونه محاکمات به صورت علنی با دسترسی رسانه‌ها و سایر ناظران حمایت می‌کنیم. همچنین، خواستار لغو تمامی اتهامات علیه نرگس محمدی و آزادی او هستیم. در نهایت، از جامعه بین‌المللی و دولت‌ها می‌خواهیم که فشار بر رژیم ایران را برای احترام به حقوق بشر و عدالت افزایش دهند و از تمامی سازمان‌ها و افرادی که به حقوق بشر متعهد هستند می‌خواهیم که در مطالبه عدالت برای نرگس محمدی و همه صداهای خاموش شده و تحت آزار در ایران به ما بپیوندند.»
در ۲۹ خرداد، وکیل محمدی اعلام کرد که شعبه ۲۹ دادگاه انقلاب تهران حکم یک سال حبس اضافی به اتهام «تبلیغ علیه نظام» را صادر کرده است. شواهد ارائه شده برای این حکم شامل بیانیه‌ها و پیام صوتی او از زندان، نامه او درباره تحریم انتخابات ایران، و مکاتبات او با پارلمان‌های سوئد و نروژ هستند. در ۳۰ اردیبهشت نرگس محمدی توسط دادستانی فقط یک روز پس از ارسال پیام صوتی از زندان احضار شد و این پرونده به سرعت به مرحله محاکمه رسید. جلسه دادگاه این پرونده در تاریخ ۱۹ خرداد بدون حضور نرگس محمدی برگزار شد.
نرگس محمدی، مدافع حقوق بشر، روزنامه‌نگار، نویسنده، معاون و سخنگوی کانون مدافعان حقوق بشر در ایران است. در طول زندگی‌اش، او ۱۳ بار بازداشت شده، ۹ بار محکوم شده و مجموعاً بیش از ۳۶ سال حبس دریافت کرده است. تاکنون ۱۰ سال در زندان و ۱۳۵ روز در انفرادی بوده است. دوره بازداشت کنونی او از آبان ۱۴۰۰ آغاز شده است.
مبارزه بی‌وقفه نرگس محمدی برای حقوق بشر به‌طور بین‌المللی شناخته شده است و او تا به حال جوایز متعددی از جمله جایزه صلح نوبل ۲۰۲۳، جایزه آزادی مطبوعات جهانی یونسکو/گیرمو کانو ۲۰۲۳، جایزه آزادی نوشتن PEN/Barbey ۲۰۲۳، و جایزه شجاعت گزارشگران بدون مرز ۲۰۲۲ را دریافت کرده است.
