Free Narges Coalition calls for urgent release and medical care as Narges Mohammadi’s health deteriorates in prison

The Free Narges Coalition steering committee expresses urgent concern over the deterioration of health of imprisoned 2023 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Narges Mohammadi in Iran’s notorious Evin prison, where she has been continuously detained since November 2021, following prior periods of incarceration. Mohammadi has spent more than 10 years of her life behind bars in retaliation for her journalism and human rights activism, and additional charges and sentences continue to be added in reprisal for continuing to speak out from inside prison.
On 30 July, the coalition was informed about the results of new medical tests and reports, carried out on 6 July after a 45-day delay, which showed a worrying deterioration of her health due to cardiovascular risks, gastrointestinal complications, and spinal disc herniation. She has been hospitalised several times during her detention since November 2021, including with a 75-percent blockage of one of her main coronary arteries in February 2022, when she underwent an emergency angioplasty and a stent was placed inside that artery. Results of new medical tests show this stent requires replacement due to another blockage, and two other arteries may also need urgent angioplasty. Moreover, in the past eight months Mohammadi has been suffering from acute back and knee pain, including a herniated spinal disc, according to the medical specialists and MRI and CT scan examinations. This condition requires physiotherapy and other regular treatment, which has been communicated to the Evin prison authorities three times in the past eight months; however, treatment has so far been denied. Additionally, in February, Mohammadi underwent an endoscopy which showed lesions in her oesophagus and stomach, for which she is currently dependent on medication.
Additionally, in mid-June, Mohammadi’s lawyer announced that Branch 29 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court had issued a verdict sentencing Mohammadi to an additional prison sentence of one year on charges of “propaganda activities against the state.” The evidence cited for this sentence includes her statements and voice messages sent from prison, her letter concerning the boycott of parliamentary elections in Iran, her communications with the parliaments of Sweden and Norway, and exposing sexual violence and other human rights abuses against women prisoners.

Mohammadi is a woman human rights defender, journalist, author, and deputy director and spokesperson of the Defenders of Human Rights Centre (DHRC) in Iran. Mohammadi’s current period of detention started in November 2021, following her sentencing in May 2021 on charges of committing “propaganda activity against the state;” overall, she has spent more than 10 years of her life behind bars during several periods of incarceration. Her tireless struggle for human rights has been internationally recognised, and she is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, the 2023 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, the 2023 PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Award, and the 2022 Reporters Without Borders Prize for Courage.

ائتلاف آزادی نرگس خواستار آزادی فوری و درمان پزشکی او در پی وخامت سلامت در زندان است
کمیته راهبردی ائتلاف آزادی نرگس نسبت به وخامت وضعیت سلامت نرگس محمدی، برنده جایزه صلح نوبل سال ۲۰۲۳، در زندان بدنام اوین ابراز نگرانی شدید می‌کند. او از آبان سال ۱۴۰۰ و پس از گذراندن دوره‌های حبس قبلی در این زندان محبوس است. محمدی تاکنون بیش از ده سال از زندگی خود را در نتیجه انتقام‌جویی مقامات نسبت به فعالیت‌های حقوق بشری و خبرنگاری، پشت میله‌های زندان سپری کرده است. این در حالی است که او تحت حبس نیز به دلیل ادامه ابراز دیدگاه‌هایش، با اتهامات و احکام جدید روبه رو می‌شود.
در تاریخ ۹ مرداد ماه، ائتلاف آزادی نرگس از نتایج آزمایش‌ها و گزارشات پزشکی جدیدی مطلع شد که در تاریخ ۱۶ تیر ماه، با یک ماه و نیم تاخیر انجام شده و نشان‌دهنده وخامت حال جسمی نرگس محمدی به دلیل معضلات قلبی-عروقی، گوارشی، و ستون مهره‌هاست. او در طول بازداشت خود از آبان ۱۴۰۰ چندین بار در بیمارستان بستری شده است، از جمله در بهمن ۱۴۰۰ که با گرفتگی ۷۵ درصدی یکی از شریان‌های اصلی قلب، تحت آنژیوپلاستی فوری قرار گرفت و یک لوله توری یا استنت در آن شریان کار گذاشته شد. نتایج آزمایشات پزشکی جدید نشان می‌دهند این استنت بنا به انسداد جدید نیاز به جایگزینی دارد و احتمالاً دو رگ قلبی- عروقی دیگر نیز به مداخله مشابهی نیاز خواهند داشت. علاوه بر این، در هشت ماه گذشته، محمدی از درد شدید در ناحیه کمر و زانو رنج می‌برد که بنا بر تشخیص تیم پزشکی متخصص و آزمایش سی تی اسکن و ام آر آی در اثر آسیب دیدگی دیسک ستون فقرات است. مراتب درمان این عارضه که نیاز به فیزیوتراپی و سایر درمان‌های منظم دارد، سه بار در هشت ماه گذشته با مقامات زندان مکاتبه شده اما تاکنون با انجام آن مخالفت شده است. علاوه بر این، محمدی در بهمن سال گذشته تحت آندوسکوپی قرار گرفت و نتایج آن حاکی از وجود زخم‌هایی در معده و مری او بود. او هم‌اکنون برای درمان این عارضه‌ها دارو مصرف می‌کند.
هم‌چنین، در اواخر خرداد ماه، وکیل محمدی اعلام کرد که شعبه ۲۹ دادگاه انقلاب تهران حکم یک سال حبس اضافی به اتهام «تبلیغ علیه نظام» را صادر کرده است. شواهد ارائه شده برای این حکم شامل بیانیه‌ها و پیام‌‌های صوتی او از زندان، نامه او درباره تحریم انتخابات مجلس در ایران، مکاتبات او با پارلمان‌های سوئد و نروژ، و افشای خشونت جنسی و دیگر موارد نقض حقوق زنان زندانی بوده‌اند.
«ائتلاف آزادی نرگس به‌شدت نگران وخامت وضعیت سلامت نرگس محمدی تحت بازداشت است و پس از خبرهای نگران‌کننده در پی آزمایشات پزشکی اخیر، مقامات ایران را فرامی‌خواند تا او را فوراً آزاد کرده و ملزمات دسترسی کامل و مستقل او به امکانات درمانی را بلافاصله فراهم کنند.»
نرگس محمدی مدافع حقوق بشر، روزنامه‌نگار، نویسنده، معاون و سخنگوی کانون مدافعان حقوق بشر در ایران است. دوره کنونی بازداشت محمدی از آبان ۱۴۰۰ پس از محکومیتی در اردیبهشت ۱۴۰۰ به اتهام «فعالیت تبلیغی علیه نظام» آغاز شد. او تا کنون و در مجموع بیش از ده سال از عمر خود در دوره‌های مختلف پشت میله‌های زندان گذرانده‌است. مبارزه بی‌وقفه نرگس محمدی برای حقوق بشر به طور بین‌المللی شناخته شده است و او تا به حال جوایز متعددی از جمله جایزه صلح نوبل ۲۰۲۳، جایزه آزادی مطبوعات جهانی یونسکو/گیرمو کانو ۲۰۲۳، جایزه آزادی نوشتن PEN/Barbey ۲۰۲۳، و جایزه شجاعت گزارشگران بدون مرز ۲۰۲۲ را دریافت کرده است.
