Narges Mohammadi’s Message for Anniversary of “Woman, Life, Freedom”
On the occasion of Mahsa Amini Remembrance Day, held to honor the life and memory of Mahsa Amini and to reflect on the ongoing struggle for justice in Iran, Nobel Peace Laureate Narges Mohammadi sent a message to the Narges Foundation event in Paris. Speaking via video from Tehran, she expressed her hope for victory and solidarity. She emphasized that despite the very difficult situation facing the people, she remains hopeful for a brighter future.

Three years ago, we witnessed the emergence of a remarkable and powerful movement called Woman, Life, Freedom. These three words need no further explanation. In my view, women’s agency is one of the movement’s defining characteristics. It has had a profound and lasting impact on our society. While the Woman, Life, Freedom movement continues the legacy of previous uprisings and protests, the timing of this movement has been crucial.
This time, women’s agency within a nationwide movement gave it a new form and enabled it to gain rapid global attention. One of the Islamic Republic’s main objectives has always been the suppression of women. Its goal was to prevent women from playing the role they could have in societal transformations. Women’s subjugation was deliberate, with clear objectives. The oppression of women by a political and ideological system has had heavy consequences for society, and especially for women. Yet after years of government efforts, it is women who, in opposition to this authoritarian religious system, can transform the streets into spaces of protest. This resistance gains strength. It asserts itself, becoming a powerful tool in social movements with deeply political significance. This is a movement that has influenced multiple layers of society—politics, culture, and even religious spheres. Other progressive movements may not have achieved such impact. Its achievements are immense, even if we do not fully recognize them now, or make enough effort to showcase them.
This may be due to the difficult conditions in our society. Beyond severe state repression and security threats, people face political oppression. The resilience of the Iranian people, in my view, is truly exemplary on a global scale. The responses, tactics, and strategies used in social movements have been applied creatively in the Woman, Life, Freedom movement over the past three years. One example is the appropriation of state events. Events that the government had tried to monopolize are, when they occur, reclaimed by the people—the slogans, the street presence, the organization itself. The people take ownership. What the government intended as a show of power instead becomes a demonstration of its weakness. It is the people who display their strength and authority. That is why the government struggles even to hold its own events. People stand against it, and the state is increasingly isolated. We are in a critical, eventful phase. I hope we can move through it safely, and that the Iranian people, after decades of struggle, will achieve democracy. I remain hopeful, committed, and determined—looking forward to victory.
سه سال پیش شاهد شکل‌گیری جنبشی باشکوه و تأثیرگذار به نام زن، زندگی، آزادی بودیم. این سه کلمه نیازی به توضیح ندارند. عاملیت زنان، به اعتقاد من، یکی از ویژگی‌های اساسی این جنبش است.
این جنبش تأثیرات بسیار عمیق و پایداری بر جامعه ما گذاشته است. هرچند ادامه‌دهنده جنبش‌ها و قیام‌های پیشین است، و گذر زمان بسیار مهم بوده، اما این بار، عاملیت زنان در یک جنبش سراسری، شکلی تازه به آن بخشید و توانست به سرعت توجه جهانی را جلب کند. یکی از اهداف اصلی جمهوری اسلامی همیشه سرکوب زنان بوده است.
بی تردید هدف حکومت، جلوگیری از نقش زنان در تحولات اجتماعی و سیاسی در جامعه بود. فرودست‌سازی زنان با اهداف مشخص و عمدی انجام شد و ستم بر زنان توسط یک نظام سیاسی و ایدئولوژیک تبعات سنگینی برای جامعه و به‌ویژه زنان داشته است.
با وجود سال‌ها تلاش حکومت، اکنون زنان هستند که در برابر این نظام استبدادی دینی، خیابان‌ها را به عرصه اعتراض تبدیل می‌کنند و این اعتراض روزبه‌روز قوی‌تر می‌شود.
اعتراض جمعی و خیابانی به عنوان ابزاری قدرتمند در حرکت‌ها و جنبش های اجتماعی، معنا و اثر سیاسی عمیقی دارد. جنبش زن ، زندگی ، آزادی لایه‌های مختلف جامعه—سیاست، فرهنگ و حتی دین—را تحت تأثیر قرار داده است.
دستاوردهای این جنبش بسیار است، حتی اگر هنوز قدر آن را ندانیم یا تلاش کافی برای نمایش آن نکرده باشیم.
با وجود شرایط سخت، مقاومت مردم ایران نمونه‌ای برجسته و الهام‌بخش برای جهان است. تاکتیک‌ها و ابتکارات مردم، مانند مصادره رویدادهای حکومتی، نشان می‌دهد که قدرت واقعی در دست مردم است و حکومت در عرصه عمومی ناتوان است.
ما در مرحله‌ای حساس و پرحادثه قرار داریم و امیدوارم از این مرحله با سلامت عبور کنیم و مردم ایران پس از دهه‌ها مبارزه، به دموکراسی دست یابند. من امیدوارم، متعهد هستم و به پیروزی امیدوارم.
