Truckers’ Protests in Iran Grow, Gain Support from Prominent Dissidents
(AP) — Truck drivers across Iran blocked roads and ports on Wednesday in an escalating strike over low wages, high insurance premiums, and fears of a potential fuel price hike.
The strike began last Thursday in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas — one of Iran’s key transportation and shipping centers — and has since spread to several provinces. What started as a labor protest is now drawing national attention and support from prominent opposition figures and civil society.
Among those supporting the truckers is Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Narges Mohammadi, who released a video message in response to a widely circulated clip of Shahab Darabi’s mother, who showed the aftermath of a violent security raid on their home during her son’s arrest.
In the video, Mohammadi expresses solidarity with Darabi and his mother and condemns the government’s harsh response to peaceful support of the truckers’ strike. Darabi had reportedly backed the strike publicly before being detained.
Here is Narges Mohammadi’s statement in response to the video of Shahab Darabi’s mother:
As if every day we open our eyes in this land, we must hear the anguished cry of a mother shouting, “Help me!”
Like the mother of Pedram Madani, a 41-year-old engineer who was just executed. We heard her voice crying out:
“I am a math teacher. Please review my son’s case once more. I served the children of this country for 34 years. He did not deserve execution. Don’t execute him.”
Her husband was also a teacher. But her voice was not heard — and their son was executed. Last year, overwhelmed by grief as her son remained imprisoned…
And now, we hear the voice of Shahab Darabi’s mother, screaming as she shows her home — a home that was savagely raided by government security forces. Her son was handcuffed and taken away right before her eyes.
She still has no information about his whereabouts.
We hear these cries from mothers every single day in Iran—because of the cruelty of this regime.
But what did Shahab Darabi do? He supported the striking truck drivers.
And what did the truck drivers do wrong?
They didn’t strike just for their own livelihood—they went on strike for all of us.
These truck drivers risk their lives every day on unsafe roads, with unsafe vehicles, to deliver essential goods to the people.
They’ve reached a point where they say, “We can’t go on anymore.”
They are defending the livelihood of each and every one of us.
They are standing up for the needs of every household in this country.
Supporting their rights is supporting our own rights—because our daily essentials are being transported by them, on those same dangerous roads.
If Shahab Darabi is the voice of those striking workers, is this how we respond?
By violently arresting him?
By tearing apart his home?
By driving his mother into screams and despair?
For what?
This government has shown us nothing but oppression and brutality.
People of Iran, we must stand together.
We must be the voice of the protesters.
We must be the voice of the prisoners.
We must speak for the strikers—and for those facing execution.
I ask you—I beg you:
Support the truck drivers’ strike.
They are not just fighting for their own rights—they are fighting for all of us.
Don’t let the government silence those who stand with them.
Don’t let Shahab Darabi stay behind bars.
Don’t let us hear yet another grieving mother’s cries in this land.
As for me—I fully support the truck drivers’ strike.
I support their demands.
I support those who raise their voices and carry their message to the world.
I support Shahab Darabi.
I support his mother—the tired, worn-out voice of a woman who has suffered so much.
Let us walk side by side, stand with each other, and fight together to reclaim our rights.
Because reclaiming one another’s rights is reclaiming the rights of us all.

حمایت نرگس محمدی از اعتراض کامیون‌داران و خانواده‌های بازداشت‌شدگان
تاریخ: ۹ خرداد ۱۴۰۴ (۲۹ مه ۲۰۲۵)
انگار هر روز که در این سرزمین چشم باز می‌کنیم، باید صدای تظلم مادری را بشنویم که فریاد می‌زند: «به دادم برسید!»
مثل مادر پدرام مدنی، مهندس ۴۱ ساله‌ای که به‌تازگی اعدام شده. صدای مادرش را شنیدیم که با فریاد می‌گفت:
«من دبیر ریاضی‌ام. پرونده پسرم را یک‌بار دیگر بررسی کنید. من ۳۴ سال به فرزندان این کشور خدمت کردم. او مستحق اعدام نیست. اعدامش نکنید.»
همسر او هم فرهنگی بود. اما صدای این مادر شنیده نشد، و فرزندشان را اعدام کردند. سال گذشته، از شدت اندوهِ زندانی بودنِ فرزندش…
و امروز، صدای مادر شهاب دارابی را می‌شنویم. فریاد می‌زند، خانه‌اش را نشان می‌دهد — خانه‌ای که با یورش وحشیانه مأموران امنیتی مورد حمله قرار گرفته، و پسرش را با دستبند، جلوی چشمانش از خانه برده‌اند.
او هیچ اطلاعی از وضعیت پسرش ندارد. ما هر روز صدای فریاد مادرانی را می‌شنویم که زیر بار ظلم حکومت به ستوه آمده‌اند.
اما شهاب دارابی چه کرده؟ از کامیون‌دارانی که دست به اعتصاب زدند، حمایت کرده است. مگر کامیون‌داران چه کرده‌اند؟ آنها نه فقط برای منافع صنفی خود، بلکه به‌خاطر تک‌تک ما ایرانی‌ها اعتصاب کردند.
کامیون‌دارانی که با جاده‌های ناامن و ماشین‌های غیراستاندارد، جان خود را کف دست می‌گیرند تا مایحتاج مردم را جابه‌جا کنند، حالا به نقطه‌ای رسیده‌اند که فریاد می‌زنند: «کار دیگر ممکن نیست.»
آنها در حقیقت از منافع همه ما ایرانی‌ها محافظت می‌کنند. اعتراض آنها، اعتراض به بی‌عدالتی و مطالبه حقوق ماست — تأمین حقوق آنها، تأمین حقوق تک‌تک ماست. چرا که همین مایحتاج ما با همین جاده‌ها و همین ماشین‌ها و به دست همین افراد منتقل می‌شود.
اگر شهاب دارابی صدای اعتصاب‌کنندگان است، آیا باید این‌چنین وحشیانه بازداشتش کنیم؟ خانه‌اش را زیر و رو کنیم؟ مادرش را به فریاد و فغان بیندازیم؟ چرا؟ جز اینکه چیزی جز ظلم از این حکومت به نمایش گذاشته نمی‌شود.
مردم ایران! ما باید پشتِ هم باشیم. ما باید صدای اعتراض‌کنندگان باشیم. صدای زندانیان، صدای اعتصاب‌کنندگان، صدای محکومان به اعدام باشیم. من از مردم ایران خواهش می‌کنم، استدعا می‌کنم:
از اعتصاب کامیون‌داران و رانندگانی که برای احقاق حقوق خود، که در واقع احقاق حقوق ماست، به پا خواسته‌اند، حمایت کنید. نگذارید کسانی را که با آنها همصدا شده‌اند، ساکت و خاموش کنند.
نگذارید شهاب دارابی در زندان بماند. نگذارید باز هم صدای مادر داغدار دیگری را در این سرزمین بشنویم. من به سهم خودم، از اعتصاب کامیون‌داران و رانندگان حمایت می‌کنم.
از مطالبات‌شان حمایت می‌کنم. از کسانی که صدای اعتراض آنها را به گوش جهانیان می‌رسانند، حمایت می‌کنم. از شهاب دارابی حمایت می‌کنم. از مادرش حمایت می‌کنم — مادری که صدای خسته و زخمی یک زن رنج‌دیده است.
بیایید دوشادوش، پشت‌به‌پشت، کنار هم برای احقاق حقوق یکدیگر تلاش کنیم. احقاق حقِ یکدیگر، احقاق حقوق همه ماست.
