A Conversation on the Importance of Protecting Democracy and Human Rights
On April 21st, as Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Narges Mohammadi marked her birthday, she engaged in a powerful conversation with Jørgen Watne Frydnes, Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. In this dialogue, Narges reflected on the global challenges facing democracy, human rights, and peace—and offered her heartfelt advice on how civil society and democratic institutions can not only resist repression but move forward with strength and purpose.
Drawing from the lived experience of Iranian women and her own journey, she emphasized the need for international solidarity among human rights institutions, organizations, and civil society movements worldwide—and the urgent responsibility of democratic nations and their activists to safeguard shared values and human rights, not just for themselves, but for all those around the world still fighting to achieve democracy and justice.
Today, as Narges is temporarily out of prison, we celebrate her strength and wisdom. We sincerely hope she is never forced to return to prison again, and we wish her continued freedom, peace, and the justice she so bravely fights for.

در این گفت‌وگو، نرگس محمدی به چالش‌های جهانی پیشِ روی دموکراسی، حقوق بشر و صلح پرداخت و توصیه‌هایی ارائه داد که چگونه جامعه‌ی مدنی و نهادهای دموکراتیک می‌توانند نه‌تنها در برابر سرکوب ایستادگی کنند، بلکه با قدرت و هدفی روشن به پیش بروند.
او با تکیه بر تجربه‌ی زیسته‌ی زنان ایران و مسیر پرفراز و نشیب خود، بر ضرورت همبستگی بین‌المللی میان نهادهای مدنی و مؤسسات حقوق بشری، و نیز بر مسئولیت فوری جوامع دموکراتیک برای حفاظت از ارزش‌های انسانی تأکید کرد—نه فقط برای خودشان، بلکه برای همه‌ی آنانی که در گوشه‌وکنار جهان، همچنان در راه دستیابی به حقوق بشر، برابری، حقوق زنان و دموکراسی مبارزه می‌کنند.
امروز، در حالی که نرگس محمدی به‌طور موقت بیرون از زندان است، ایستادگی او را گرامی می‌داریم. از ژرفای دل آرزو داریم که هرگز ناچار به بازگشت به زندان نشود و آزادی بی‌پایان، آرامش، صلح و عدالت را که با شجاعت سال‌هاست برای آن‌ها می‌جنگد، تجربه کند.»
