Narges Mohammadi is a woman human rights defender, journalist, author, and deputy director and spokesperson of the Defenders of Human Rights Centre (DHRC) in Iran. Throughout her lifetime of activism, she has been arrested 13 times, convicted five times, and received prison sentences totalling more than 35 years. She has so far spent more than 10 years in prison and 135 days total in solitary confinement.
Mohammadi’s current period of detention started in November 2021, following her sentencing in May 2021 on charges of committing “propaganda activity against the state.” Cumulatively, adding further cases brought against her in January 2022, October 2022, and January 2024, she has now been sentenced to 13 years and two months in prison, as well as 154 lashes on trumped-up charges, including “acting against national security.” Additional charges and sentences continue to be added in reprisal for her persistence in speaking out from inside prison.
On 8 June 2024, Mohammadi was summoned to appear before Branch 29 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court on the charge of “propaganda activities against the state” in connection with her activities and public statements from inside prison, including exposing sexual violence and other human rights abuses against women prisoners. Mohammadi, who has been denied access to phone calls and family visitation since November 2023, has denounced this charge and refused to appear in the closed-door court session as the basic conditions she requested were not met, including the presence of the survivors of sexual abuses in detention and independent media.
During her time in detention, Mohammadi has been denied access to healthcare, medical furlough, and contact with her family, which has led to her going on a hunger strike three times demanding these rights for herself and other prisoners. She has also been subjected to solitary confinement, sexual harassment and other abusive treatment in custody. Narges’ plight demonstrates persistent human rights violations perpetrated by the Iranian authorities.
Despite this oppression, Mohammadi continues to fight for her freedom and the freedom of all from behind the walls of Evin prison. Her unyielding struggle for human rights has been internationally recognised, and she is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, the 2023 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, the 2023 PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Award, and the 2022 Reporters Without Borders Prize for Courage.

نرگس محمدی، مدافع حقوق بشر، روزنامه‌نگار، نویسنده ، نایب رئیس و سخنگوی کانون مدافعان حقوق بشر در ایران است. او در طول زندگی اش، ۱۳ بار بازداشت شده، پنج بار محکوم شده و مجموعاً به بیش از ۳۵ سال زندان محکوم شده است. تا کنون بیش از ۱۰ سال را در زندان و ۱۳۵ روز را در سلول انفرادی سپری کرده است.
دوره کنونی بازداشت محمدی از آبان ۱۴۰۰ پس از محکومیت در اردیبهشت ماه به اتهام «فعالیت تبلیغی علیه نظام» آغاز شد. با افزودن پرونده‌های دیگر که در دی ماه ۱۴۰۰، مهر ۱۴۰۱، و دی ۱۴۰۲ علیه او مطرح شده‌اند، او اکنون به ۱۳ سال و دو ماه زندان و ۱۵۴ ضربه شلاق به اتهامات واهی از جمله «اقدام علیه امنیت ملی» محکوم شده است. این در حالی است که اتهامات و پرونده سازی های جدید به جهت انتقام‌جویی از نرگس بابت بیان نظراتش از داخل زندان همچنان ادامه دارد.
شنبه ۱۹ خرداد ۱۴۰۳، نرگس محمدی به شعبه ۲۹ دادگاه انقلاب تهران با اتهام «تبلیغ علیه نظام» و به دلیل اعتراض و روایت‌گری از تعرض جنسی به زنان زندانی و بازداشت‌شده و اظهارات علنی‌اش از داخل زندان، فراخوانده شد. محمدی که از آبان ۱۴۰۲ از دسترسی به تماس تلفنی و ملاقات با خانواده محروم بوده است، این اتهام را محکوم کرده و از حضور در جلسه دادگاه غیرعلنی خودداری کرده است، زیرا شرایط اساسی که درخواست کرده بود، از جمله حضور بازماندگان شاهد سوءاستفاده‌های جنسی و رسانه‌های مستقل، فراهم نشده بود.
در دوران بازداشت، محمدی از دسترسی به خدمات بهداشتی، مرخصی پزشکی و تماس با خانواده‌اش محروم بوده است، که بارها منجر به اعتراض او به اشکال مختلف از جمله سه بار اعتصاب غذا وی در مطالبه این حقوق اولیه برای خود و سایر زندانیان شده است. او همچنین در دوران بازداشت بارها با حبس در سلول انفرادی، آزار جنسی و سایر رفتارهای خشونت‌آمیز مواجه شده است. وضعیت نرگس محمدی نشان دهنده نقض مداوم حقوق بشر توسط مقامات حکومت جمهوری اسلامی است.
علی‌رغم همه سرکوب ها، نرگس محمدی همچنان از پشت دیوارهای زندان اوین برای آزادی خود و آزادی همگان مبارزه می‌کند. مبارزه بی‌وقفه او برای حقوق بشر بارها در جهان مورد تقدیر قرار گرفته است و او جوایز متعددی از جمله جایزه صلح نوبل ۲۰۲۳، جایزه جهانی آزادی مطبوعات یونسکو/گیلرمو کانو ۲۰۲۳، جایزه آزادی بیان PEN/Barbey ۲۰۲۳ و جایزه شجاعت خبرنگاران بدون مرز ۲۰۲۲ را دریافت کرده است.
